What does fun have to do with organizing?
Everything. Okay, maybe not everything. But I think it's important. I loved this book by Catherine Price. She also wrote the excellent book How to Break Up With Your Phone.
My passion for organizing comes down to one thing, and one thing only: LIVING YOUR BEST F****ING LIFE! That's it. There are a lot of neat freaks out there who just love love love a tidy linen closet for the hell of it. I'm not one of those. And truly, God bless them. It takes all kinds. Maybe that's their idea of fun? But for me, organizing is about taking a shortcut to LESS cleaning and MORE joy.
The Power of Fun argues that fun is essential to our well-being and that most of us aren't having enough of it. I love that she actually defines FUN, something I had never thought about. She says it must contain three elements: playfulness, connection, and flow.
Playfulness: This involves an attitude of lightheartedness, curiosity, and a willingness to engage with the moment without a specific goal in mind.
Connection: This refers to a sense of shared experience and rapport with others.
Flow: This is the state of being fully absorbed in an activity, losing track of time and self-consciousness.
Price argues that modern life often prioritizes productivity and efficiency over fun, leading to a state of chronic stress and dissatisfaction. She contrasts "true fun" with "fake fun," which includes activities that may seem enjoyable on the surface but don't provide genuine fulfillment, such as doomscrolling on social media or passively watching television.
Ultimately, "The Power of Fun" reminded me that I MUST HAVE FUN! It is now in my top five values.
