It's totally natural for clutter to build up as we get older. And it's not entirely our fault! Often, you've raised children, your parents have passed, and you've lived a whole life. So you've got your stuff, your kids old trophies, 1,389 drawings from your granddaughter and your late father's stamp collection.
But this is NOT a fun way to live out the golden years. And it's also not safe. Plus, you may be thinking about how the next generation will deal with all of the stuff you pass on.
Excessive clutter often increases with age and it can be dangerous in many ways. The National Institute of Health has studied the impact of clutter on seniors, including:
Increases risk of falling and other household injuries.
Poses a fire hazard in the kitchen.
Blocks access for emergency responders and healthcare workers.
Makes it difficult to make and store food safely, leading to malnutrition or food-borne illness.
Exasperates social isolation, depression, stress and even dementia.
On top of all that, after a certain age, the moving and hauling and sorting and resorting and decision making of decluttering is pretty tough on the body. A professional organizer can simplify and speed up the process. A more attractive and safer home is possible at any age.
